Photo Description
The Bogey Hole, Newcastle NSW.
One of the most popular and unique swimming spots in Newcastle is the heritage listed “Bogey Hole” baths. It’s a purpose-built ocean swimming pool that was dug out by convicts in 1819 for the personal use of Major James Morisset, the first commandant of Newcastle. Some have suggested that it was an enlargement of a naturally occurring rock pool used by local Aboriginal people, but it is not known for sure.
I was wandering around this particular morning looking for a different composition for sunrise and came across a nice vantage point here. The headland above the Bogey Hole was picking up some great light from the sunrise and accenting all the ridges in the cliff side. I thought this photograph helped portray the isolated location of the baths, originally referred to as the ‘Commandant’s Baths’. It’s undergone a few “upgrades” and enlargments over the years but still maintains that natural rock pool look I think.
