Photo Description
Ironbark Falls, Central Coast NSW.
Tucked away in a small pocket of rainforest on the Central Coast of NSW, lies this beautiful 6 metre high waterfall cascading into a narrow gully, forgotten and neglected. There’s not much around it; a scattered few houses, rural paddocks and orchards or varying types of fruits.
Due to the prevalence of sandstone in the region, it’s amazing to see that even as far as 30km inland you can get these cool little sandy beaches below the waterfalls, something you don’t see at other waterfalls I’ve visited around Australia. It seems to be a common trait localised to the Central Coast and Sydney region, where the geology allows for this type of scene to come to life. It’s quite beautiful when compared to other places, where the base of the waterfalls are predominantly taken over by rocky bases, littered with boulders and pebbles – also a beautiful sight, but quite a common trait around the world.
It seems like this waterfall (and national park area) has been completely forgotten about by most, as it is no longer mentioned in any maps and the path is extremely overgrown and neglected. A few sporadic visits by other photographers affords me the knowledge that it hasn’t completely disappeared from the world, to return to its undisturbed state. The early hours of a misty Sunday morning allowed me to spend a few hours here working on various compositions in complete peace, with not a single soul visiting while I was here. It might be omitted from view now, but has not left the memories of many I’m sure, and hopefully I’ve been able to preserve its beauty within this photograph.
